What Softaculous does for you
Setting up a web application the manual way means downloading an archive, uploading it by FTP, creating a database and a database user, editing a config file, and running an installer. Softaculous does all of that for you. You pick the application, choose the domain and directory, set an admin password, and click Install. A minute later the site is live and ready to log in to.
